Høyanger Background: A Town Shaped by Hydropower and Industry

Høyanger is a small town in Vestland County, Norway, known for its rich industrial history and stunning location along the Sognefjord. The town developed in the early 1900s when hydropower was harnessed to support Norway’s growing aluminum industry. With abundant waterfalls and steep mountains, Høyanger became an ideal place for hydroelectric power production, which led to the establishment of an aluminum factory in 1918. This industry has played a crucial role in the town’s economy and development ever since.

Today, Høyanger has around 4,000 residents and remains an important center for energy production and industrial activity. It is also unique because it is the only municipality in Norway divided by a fjord, making transportation and infrastructure an interesting challenge.

Beyond industry, Høyanger offers a wide range of outdoor activities. The town has excellent opportunities for skiing, cross-country skiing, fishing, and swimming, as well as strong local communities in soccer and handball. With its breathtaking nature and deep industrial roots, Høyanger is a place where history, energy, and outdoor life come together.

Natural Resources and the Green Transition Energy, minerals and sustainable development in a European perspective Welcome to Høyanger! A central aim of the Erasmus+ collaboration is to explore shared challenges and opportunities in Europe. During this visit, students will examine how natural resources are used and managed in the transition towards a more sustainable society. The programme focuses on three key themes: energy production, mineral resources and circular economy. Through visits, presentations and case work, students will explore both the opportunities and the dilemmas connected to resource use, industrial development and environmental sustainability. The final day will bring these themes together through discussions and case work, encouraging students to reflect on how societies can balance economic development, environmental protection and future needs.
