Minerals and the Green Transition
Mineral mining provides important raw materials used in technology, construction, and renewable energy systems. Metals such as copper and lithium are needed for electric cars, batteries, and wind turbines. Mining can also create jobs and economic growth in regions where minerals are found.
At the same time, mining can damage nature. Large areas of land may be disturbed, habitats destroyed, and water or soil polluted by mining waste. Because of these risks, many people argue that mining should be strictly regulated and combined with recycling and more sustainable use of resources.
